LA JOLLA, California – The International Surfing Association (ISA) is delighted to confirm today that the 2022 ISA World StandUp Paddleboard Championship (WSUPPC), hosted in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will take place October 28 – November 6.
This year’s WSUPPC is the 9th edition of the ISA event. With the world’s top SUP athletes competing, the ISA’s championship will continue to be the premier global SUP and Paddleboard competition. SUP Racing and Paddleboard will be staged in the heart of San Juan’s famous Laguna del Condado and Bahia de San Juan. SUP Surfing is scheduled to take place in “La 8”, a well-known local break.
The choice of Puerto Rico reinforces the region’s reputation as a world-class destination that celebrates the sport’s SUP and surfing heritage. In the interests of the health and safety of the athletes, the ISA did not run the event in 2020 and 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The last edition of the WSUPPC in 2019 in El Salvador welcomed 161 athletes from 27 countries and saw Justine Dupont and Benoit Carpentier clinch victory for France’s first Team Gold Medal. This year’s event is now expected to exceed 2019’s participation figures.
ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said:
“The global SUP community can now look forward with certainty to another great edition of the ISA World Championship event later this year. After the last two years of difficult times for everyone, we want to show our ongoing commitment to developing and showcasing the sport of SUP. Staging the best world-class SUP competitions in great destinations like Puerto Rico is a key part of that commitment.
“As the ISA’s investment in SUP continues to grow, we are excited to take our flagship SUP event to beautiful Puerto Rico, a location steeped in surfing and SUP culture. As the governing body for SUP at the Olympic level, the ISA is determined to build on great events like this to demonstrate the exceptional value of SUP as a potential Olympic discipline.”
IOC Member and Chair of the Local Host Committee, Richard Carrion, said:
“Puerto Rico has a longstanding tradition of water sports as well as world-class venues for SUP, surfing and other aquatic activities. We are honored to partner with the ISA to promote the development of the sport and excited to showcase everything that San Juan and Puerto Rico have to offer as a premiere sports tourism destination. I hope that others will join us and be inspired by the vision, hard work and commitment of all of those involved in this important event.”
